The Mangrove Boardwalk

Introduction to the game

“The Mangrove Boardwalk” is an educational board game that allows players to gain a better understanding of the mangrove habitat and its inhabitants.

Starting from the “Visitor Centre” space, players take turns to move their tokens around the Boardwalk according to the roll of the dice. There are 22 Stations, 4 Shelters and 2 Keys of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve (28 properties in total) around the Boardwalk to be traded. When a player lands on an unknown property, he may purchase it from the Gardener (who owns all properties at the start of the game). If a property is already owned, a player landing on it will be required to pay a trespassing fee to its owner. The planting of grass patches and tree greatly increases the fee the owner can collect. When a player needs to raise more money, the Gardener can give mortgages on properties.

While moving around the Boardwalk, players constantly get the opportunity to learn more about the flora and fauna of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. This happens when they land on any “Flora” or “Fauna” space where they will have to answer questions on plants or animals of the mangrove habitat. Answering a question correctly will entitle the player to draw a Reward card to be rewarded. Similarly, answering a question incorrectly will see the player being punished by the instructions given in the Penalty card.

The objective of the games is to be the only player left in the game who is not bankrupt. More importantly, however, the Mangrove Boardwalk is specially designed with the hope that players will eventually develop a greater appreciation of mangroves and the delicate ecosystem that it supports.
